Faculty Grants

Deadline for Faculty Grant proposal submission: March 1, 2010

Faculty Research Grants are funded jointly by the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the U.S. Department of Education (Title VI-NRC). Faculty may apply for the following activities: 1. faculty working groups; 2. individual research/travel; 3. co-taught graduate courses.

Faculty interested in applying for one time conference or special event funding should email Ada Ferrer, CLACS Director or Jen Lewis, Assistant Director with their request. Preference will be given to faculty who request funding for events co-sponsored with other departments or entities. Please note that these are one-time requests.

Faculty Working Groups:

These grants support collaborative faculty working group proposals which involve collaboration with colleagues from various departments at NYU and may include cross-university collaboration with Columbia University, our NRC consortium partner. For NYU-focused working groups of especially broad interdisciplinary scope, the budget will total up to $2,500. For joint NYU-CU groups, each university will provide a maximum of $2,500 in support, to a total of up to $5,000. Working group proposals that include a themed series of public speakers in the CLACS Colloquium schedule are especially encouraged, though working groups may also bring funded guests for seminar-style meetings, provided they are publicized and open to the broader community. Applications should include faculty and graduate student participant list, proposed
themes and related events, and budget.

Individual Research/Travel:

Grants are available to full-time NYU faculty members or library staff.  Preference will be given to junior faculty and library staff, but other members of the faculty are also encouraged to apply. Grants can be used at any time during the year for data-gathering, books and materials, research assistance, or other expenses which will facilitate faculty research on Latin America and the Caribbean. Maximum award is $5000, though most awards are less. Awards will be made for faculty travel to any country of Latin America and the Caribbean (or elsewhere when relevant to research on Latin America) to carry out research. Faculty should provide a detailed proposal, timeline and budget by the March 1, 2010 deadline.

NYU-CU Course Development:

Funds are available each year for one or two co-taught courses that bring together faculty from NYU and CU. Courses may focus on a specific problem or theme, studied across the regions of Latin America or the Caribbean in an interdisciplinary manner. These courses will be cross-listed and held at both universities, and open to graduate students from various disciplines. Funds may be used for course development and guest speakers. A draft syllabus and budget should accompany the proposal.
