Common Timelines for MA Programs

MA_Timeline.jpgThe following timeline reflects a common degree path for students pursuing an MA at CLACS. For more specific details about the MA program as well as information about joint degree and other possible programs, please refer to the official Graduate School of Arts and Science bulletin.

Students pursuing an MA at CLACS typically finish their degrees in three semesters including research during the summer between academic years. Students enrolled in joint degree, academic year FLAS and other programs typically graduate after four semesters including summer research.


Semester I – Fall
• Complete first core course, “Introduction to Latin American and Caribbean Studies I: Iberian-Atlantic and Colonial Perspectives”
• Complete 2 other courses
• Complete preliminary Master’s Project proposal
• Secure MA advisor
• Identify potential 1st and 2nd readers for Master’s Project

Semester II – Spring
• Complete second core course, “Introduction to Latin American and Caribbean Studies II: Hemispheric and Postcolonial Perspectives”
• Complete 2 other courses
• Finalize Master’s Project proposal
• Apply for summer grant funding
• Secure 1st and 2nd readers for Master’s Project

Summer
• Complete summer field research in subject of interest (recommended for the summer, but not required)
• Complete blog posts for the CLACS Blog based on research

Semester III – Fall
• Complete 2 courses, one of which could be the Research and Writing Seminar (to support completion of MA project)
***Students enrolled in joint degree, FLAS or other programs would complete 3 courses during this semester
• Complete Master’s Project, submit by end of semester
• Graduate over Winter Break

Semester IV – Spring (Students pursuing joint degree, FLAS, other programs)
• Complete 3 courses
• Complete Master’s Project, submit by end of semester
• Graduate in May

Ongoing
• Attendace at major public events and conferences, most notably the CLACS Research Colloquium
• Internships
• Professional development through attendance at “Perspectives from the Field” series
• Involvement in CLACS programs, including: GALAS, L.A.N.D., and Quechua initiatives
