Teaching Haiti in Context: A Workshop for Teachers
This two-day workshop for New York-area teachers will focus on the recent earthquake in Haiti, and the responses that it has garnered in the United States and internationally. The goal of this workshop is to address both the necessity and challenges of bringing conversations about the earthquake in Haiti and other international crises into our schools and classrooms. Educator Conference
Teaching the Cold War and Latin America in a High School Classroom
Through the CLACS Teacher Residency Program, which began in October of 2010, select K-12 teachers have worked closely with NYU faculty members, NYU Bobst Library resources, and CLACS K-12 outreach staff to research topics relevant to Latin America. Supported by experts, residents performed research and developed curricular materials for use in their classrooms. The culminating event of the Teacher Residency Program will be this one-day conference during which Residents will present materials to an audience of their peers. The day will consist of workshops presented by both NYU professors and CLACS teacher residents on different topics relating to the Cold War in Latin America. Prof. Greg Grandin will be the keynote speaker.

How can teachers bring global themes into the classroom? Educator Institute
A Summer Institute for Educators: Colonial Latin America
This Summer Institute for K-12 educators will explore the theme of Colonial Latin America to understand the ways in which the colonial period contributed to Latin American identities and to explore underlying power dynamics that prevail today. The institute will consist of a weeklong workshop and an optional weeklong trip to the Dominican Republic.

Indocumentales/Undocumentaries
Screening of "Farmingville" - Educator Workshop
CLACS will be hosting two film screenings and discussions as part of the Indocumentales/Undocumentaries: US-Mexico Itinerant Film Series in December 2011. The workshop will begin with an exploration of the resources available to educators about US-Mexico topics collected by CLACS, and followed by a film screening of Farmingville. Following the screening, educators will discuss the issues addressed in the film with other educator colleagues and facilitators from what moves you? This unique workshop will open a space for educators to discuss pertinent current events and ways that film can contribute to classroom teaching of Mexico-US relations.

K-12 Educator Workshop and Book Presentation of El Cinco de Mayo: An American Tradition
This K-12 educators' workshop will feature a lecture and book presentation by David Hayes Bautista. His book, El Cinco de Mayo: An American Tradition, was recently published by University of California Press. The event will also feature a teacher workshop about educational materials prepared by Elizabeth Frankel-Rivera and Marisa Cadena Belski. Certificate of completion noting 2 hours of PD credit will be provided to all attendees. **Five copies of this book will be given out by lottery to participants at this event.**
